Question: Discuss About The Journal Innovative Research In Electrical? Answer: Introduction An AC system is made up of a lot of components and based on their load consuming nature they can be classified as capacitive, resistive and inductive. In case of purely resistive load the current and voltage are in phase but most of the loads connected in any facility is inductive in nature and in case of inductive loads the current lags the voltage and is therefore out of phase whereas, in case of capacitive load the current leads the voltage (Stokes, 2008). The current which is leading or lagging the voltage is called wattles current because it supplies reactive power and this power is essential for turning motors attached to the AC system (Stokes, 2008). So this type of load cannot be avoided and if this type of load increases then the accounting power requirement increases which in-turn increases the kVA demand for the same kW load (Stokes, 2008). Most of the high tension tariff charge a separate kVA charge along with the kW charges which increases the electricity bill of the con sumer (Stokes, 2008). Thus consumers having low power factor have to pay more for the useful power they use making power factor improvement a necessity. Some of the methods applied to improve power factor in a system are as follows: Capacitive power factor improvement could be easily implemented as they are capable of supplying the reactive power required by the load by connecting the capacitor bank in parallel to the inductive load (Turchi et al., 2014). The capacitor bank acts like a source of reactive power and thus the inductive load absorbs lower reactive power from the AC system thus reducing the phase difference between the current and voltage. Power factor improvement using Synchronous Condenser is another method where a three phase overexcited synchronous motor working under no load is connected to the load side of the inductive load (Turchi et al, 2014). Synchronous condenser financial like a capacitor by either supplying reactive power or by drawing lagging current from the AC supply. Phase advancer is an AC exciter which could improve the power factor of induction motor (Turchi et al., 2014). It is connected to the rotor circuit of the induction motor and is mounted on the shaft of the induction motor (Turchi et al., 2014). The flux required a slip frequency needs exciting ampere turns and the phase advancer supplies this ampere turn and thus improves the power factor. As seen above most of the methods stated above work similar to a capacitor so as to improve the power factor and therefore capacitor banks are mostly used in power factor improvement. Another advantage of using capacitors in power factor improvement is that they are readily available in different sizes and shapes and are cheaper than other methods used to improve power factor. Therefore, capacitor banks are widely used in the application of power factor improvement. This papers briefly reviews the work carried out in improving the power factor using capacitor banks. Improvement in power factor has certain advantages as follows (Natarajan, 2005): As energy efficiency improves the power consumption reduces which results in reduced fossil fuel usage and greenhouse gas emissions form the power stations. Electricity bills are reduced. The existing supply can deliver more kVA. Losses in distribution equipment and transformers are reduced. The voltage drops in long cables are reduced. The electrical burden on electrical components are also reduced. An assembly of number of capacitors is a capacitor bank and are used to generate kVAr in-order to improve power factor (Ramzan et al, 2016). Arrangements of series/paralleled connected units are called Shunt capacitors banks. Some of the types of capacitor banks used in power factor improvement are discussed below. Grounded Wye - Connected Capacitor Banks (Natarajan, 2005): They are made out of parallel and series arrangement of capacitors in each stage, providing a low impedance path to ground. They make a low-impedance way to ground giving innate self-insurance to lightning surge streams and some security from surge voltages consequently, working without surge arresters. They offer a low impedance way for high recurrence streams thus they can be utilized as channels in frameworks. In any case, the dissemination of inrush streams and music may cause fizzling and over operation on defensive transfers and wires. Ungrounded Wye - Connected Capacitor Banks (Natarajan, 2005): They don't allow substantial capacitor release streams, third consonant ebbs and flows or zero succession ebbs and flows amid framework ground deficiencies to stream. Other favourable position is that over voltages showing up at the present transformer optional may not be as high as on account of grounded banks if the nonpartisan is protected for full line voltage. Be that as it may, it is costly for banks over 15 kV. There are two classes of associating capacitor bank. They are shunt and arrangement associating. Among these two classifications, shunt capacitors are all the more generally utilized as a part of the power arrangement of all voltage levels (Chandra and Agarwal, 2014). There are some particular points of interest of utilizing shunt capacitors, for example, Reduced line current of the framework. Improved voltage level of the heap. Reduced framework misfortunes. Improved power factor of the source current. Reduced heap of the alternator. Reduced capital speculation per megawatt of the heap. All the previously mentioned benefits originate from the way that the impact of capacitor lessens responsive current moving through the entire framework. Shunt capacitor draws practically settled measure of driving current which is superimposed on the heap current and therefore diminishes responsive segments of the heap and consequently enhances the power factor of the framework (Miller, 1976). Arrangement capacitor then again has no influence over stream of current (Miller, 1976). As these are associated in arrangement with stack, the heap current dependably went through arrangement capacitor bank. The capacitive reactance of arrangement capacitor kills the inductive reactance of the line henceforth, lessens, viable reactance of the line. Power factor correction is accomplished by supplementing a capacitive or inductive circuit with a reactance of inverse stage (Andrews et al, 1996). For a normal stage slacking power factor stack, for example, a vast enlistment engine, this would comprise of a capacitor bank as a few parallel capacitors at the power contribution to the gadget. Low power factor is not that quite a bit of issue in private homes it does however turn into an issue in industry where numerous expansive engines are utilized. So there is prerequisite of remedying the power factor in industry. Low power factor is not acknowledged according to standard since poor or low power factors influence the expenses of both the buyers and the electrical power industry. In-spite of the increased cost of working, reactive power requires the utilization of transmission lines, transformers, circuit breakers, switches and wiring of higher current limits. By utilizing a PLC based capacitor bank framework we can enhance slacking power factor consequently framework will be protected from various burden of slacking power factor by utilization of this framework the power factor control turns out to be quick and exact than different techniques and likewise the electric charges are additionally diminished (Desai et al., 2015). The info waveform of voltage and current with stage distinction are bolstered to zero intersection finders, which give square waves in advanced organization. These advanced waveforms are utilized by microcontroller to compute power factor. Microcontroller takes choice to s witch suitable capacitor bank to make up for power factor. In the wake of identifying poor power factor, automatic power factor control framework switches one capacitor at any given moment out of a gathering of eight capacitors (Tiwari and Sharma, 2014). On the off chance that expected objective to accomplish power factor is met, at that point next cycle rehashed else exchanging of capacitor proceed till pay is not under control. Before the genuine execution of the automatic framework in genuine physical world, we can confirm the evidence of idea utilizing Proteus VSM (Sarkar and Hiwase, 2015). The power factor correction an additionally be done utilizing solid state switched capacitors Measuring the power factor from the heap by utilizing LM358 zero intersection circuit and CD4070BC stage move indicator, and afterward computing the power factor have been finished by the program and LCD will be utilized for show. On the off chance that the power is not in the range, the switches are on/off modelled by the controller unit and capacitors are initiate/deactivate and enhance the power factor (Popa et al, 2013). This framework gives usage done on Arduino UNO microcontroller utilizing C language software to program the microcontroller, Arduino program to decide time slack amongst current and voltage and Proteus 7.7 to mimic the power factor as indicated by the heap. Solid state switches are electronic exchanging gadgets that can work on or off positions when a little outer voltage is connected from the microcontroller (Than, 2016). In AC circuits, solid state transfers switch on at zero load current. The circuit cannot be stopped by a sine wave crest, holding the expansive transient voltages that would cause a sudden fall of the attractive field around the inductance and is known as zero-hybrid exchanging. Many focal points show up by utilizing the solid state switches in this framework. There is thinner profile, allowing quieter operation and switching which is quicker than electromechanical transfers; the exchanging time of an ordinary optically coupled SSR is in the range of microseconds to milliseconds depending on the time required to power the LED on and off. It has no moving parts to wear and no contacts to pit or develop carbon. Yield resistance stays steady in any case measure of utilization. It is significantly less delicate to working and capacitance conditions like, mugginess, vibration, mechanical stun and outer attractive fields. Power Factor Control System with solid state switched capacitor when actualized totally, will accommodate power factor change in low voltage framework. Arduino UNO controller is exceptionally prominent at this occasion, in like manner effectively to compose the program by utilizing the abnormal state language. By the utilizing of solid state switches, it can contrast and the mechanical transfers, such a significant number of dependable and productive results show up. This is the extremely effective framework for different burdens, by utilizing the distinctive sizes of capacitors and setting off the switches which were controlled by the program. In automatic power factor correction framework, we utilize potential divider circuits rather than customary zero intersection locator which gives a steadier power factor and the cost additionally get chop down in light of the fact that we don't have to utilize ICs (Utpal et al, 2016). Microcontroller usage reduces the expenses. Because of utilization of microcontroller numerous parameters can be controlled and the utilization of additional hard products, for example, clock, RAM, ROM and information yield ports lessens. Overcorrection should be avoided as current and voltage are usually more because of which the power framework or machine winds up plainly precarious and the life of capacitor banks diminishes. A PLC is a solid state modern PC that controls framework by persistently checking the state of info gadgets and settling on choices in view of foreordained program so as to control the state of yield gadgets (Vukojevic et al, 2015). The essential monotonous strides in the operation of all PLCs, incorporate, filtering the contribution, amid which the state of the considerable number of sources of info associated with the PLC is examined (Jain et al, 2016). Using Program Scan, PLC checks and executes the program rationale in a successive way, producing the yield states. Amid the Output Scan the created yield states are refreshed in the yield status registers to invigorate or de stimulate the yields gadgets that are associated with the PLC yield module. Housekeeping incorporates inward diagnostics, correspondence with programming terminals, and so forth. Evaluations There are various routes in which a capacitor bank might be associated, with the decision being reliant on the coveted hand-off security, the framework establishing, the kVAr limit of the bank and the voltage level of the framework. At first the individual capacitor units are chosen to meet the voltage necessities of the framework, at that point the quantities of parallel units are chosen to meet the kVAr requirements of the capacitor bank (Chen et al, 2010). The number of paralleled capacitor units in each stage depends on two criterions as follows: If one capacitor unit in a stage fails then it should not create a voltage drop of more than 110 percent of the evaluated voltage. If a unit fails, then adequate fault current should flow through the individual circuit to clear the fault within 300s or less. Attention should be provided to this 300s time traverse as it is most extreme, and it should be toned down to 30s of traverse time. The highest number of parallel connected capacitor units for each arrangement bunch is represented by an alternate thought. At the point when a capacitor unit comes up short, different capacitors in a similar parallel gathering would contain some charge, which would then deplete off as a high-recurrence transient current moves through the damaged unit and its breaker. This transient current has to be withstood by the breaker holder and the fizzled capacitor unit. The over-voltage induced when a capacitor unit is separated increases the quantity of capacitor units per arrangement. Failure of extra capacitors is well on the way to happen in a similar arrangement bunch as the primary failure, as they have the most elevated voltage push. Every capacitor unit is normally secured by a breaker, remotely mounted between the capacitor bank intertwine transport and the capacitor unit (Locke, 2000). With inside melded capacitors, when a capacitor pack or component falls flat, the present, through its separate fusible connection, will be extensively higher than the ordinary current and may blow the fusible connection, in this way confining the fizzled pack or component. If a wire blows in a capacitor bank, it would expand the central recurrence voltage happens on the rest of the units in that arrangement gathering. An unbalance location conspire is utilized to screen such conditions and to make a move as required (Shwedhi and Sultan, 2000). This plan more often than excludes three levels of activity. Over-voltage should be less than 110% which should be indicated using an alarm. The postponement is normally 4s or more prominent. Over-voltage greater than 110% requires Trip capacitor bank exchanging gadget as the unbalance is increased. The deferral is typically 4s or more noteworthy. Trip for extreme bank unbalance should provide fast wire clearing time with lower postponement frequency of 0.3 to 0.5s. Unbalance insurance regularly gives the essential security to arcing flaws inside a capacitor bank and different variations from the norm that may harm capacitor units as well as breakers. Arcing issues may cause generous harm in a little division of a moment. The unbalance security ought to have least purposeful deferral so as to limit the measure of harm to the bank in case of outside arcing. As Switching of capacitors are done automatically consequently we get more precise outcome, Power factor correction strategies influences framework to steady and because of change in power factor its productivity likewise increments (Than, 2016).. Power factor correction plan can be connected to enterprises, power frameworks and in addition in house hold reason. The utilization of microcontroller decreases the expenses. By utilizing microcontroller different parameters can be controlled and the utilization of additional hard products, for example, clock, RAM, ROM and info yield ports decreases. Before automatic power factor correction circuit inclusion capacitors are associated in parallel to the heap circuit, so they are outlined, for example, to be associated in parallel to stack (Khan and Owais, 2016). Capacitance of capacitors include when associated in parallel, they are associated in parallel with the hand-off switch board. Underneath figure demonstrates the association of capa citor bank. Capacitors are associated in parallel to the heap circuit, so they are composed, for example, to be associated in parallel to stack. Capacitance of capacitors include when associated in parallel, they are associated in parallel with the transfer switch board. A PLC based power factor change plot is actualized to enhance the power factor under various working conditions. The power factor controller utilizes a query table made in light of the deliberate estimation of power factor as per the look table, the PLC switches the capacitor in each stage using hand-off worked switches (Jain et al, 2016). By introducing appropriately measured power capacitors into the circuit the Power Factor is enhanced and the esteem turns out to be closer to 0.9 to 0.95, therefore, capacitor banks utilized for power factor correction decrease misfortunes and expands the proficiency of the power framework and furthermore builds security (Chen et al, 2010). By utilizing an automatic power recurrence control framework, the productivity of the framework is profoundly expanded. Conclusions Utilization of PLC as a power factor controller has turned out to be an adaptable, proficient and savvy instrument for a modern application. This improves the power quality, cost and protection in the system. By utilizing power factor correction controller, we can accomplish: higher estimations of capacitors progressively the disfiguring administration, operation with little load or sit out of gear of the engine due the increase of misshaping administration, a major contrast between the power factor in distorting administration and power factor of essentials show a higher twisting administration, if the capacitors banks are associated with arrangement curls, the disfiguring is decreased on the off chance that it utilizes channel with bring down recurrence ( 2 KHz). The Mechanically Switched Capacitors (MSCs) are the most prudent responsive power remuneration gadgets. They are a basic and minimal effort, other than being low-speed answer for voltage control and system adjustment under substantial load conditions (Oliveira et al, 2010). Their usage has no impact on the short out power yet it underpins the voltage at the purpose of association. The MSCs establishments have other advantageous impacts on the framework, for example, change of the voltage profile, better voltage direction, diminishment of misfortunes and decrease or delay of interests in the transmission and era limit. Reasonably outlined capacitor banks when associated with acceptance engines can enhance the power factor among different changes in general execution. Any glitch of the capacitor bank can, notwithstanding, cause undesirable corruption of framework execution. Power supply mutilation regularly can be measured by Power Factor and Total Harmonic distortion (Das et al, 2009) The low power factor is exceptionally undesirable as it causes an expansion in current, bringing about extra misfortunes of dynamic power in every one of the components of power framework from power station generator down to usage gadgets. With a specific end goal to guarantee most great conditions for a supply framework from building and monetary point of view, it is essential to have power factor as near solidarity as would be prudent. Change of power factor influences the service organizations to dispose of the power misfortunes and the buyers are free from low power factor punishment charges. References Andrews, D. Java Basic Principles & Features
Question: Discuss the principles, characteristics and features of programming in Java. Answer: Introduction: The report is about the designing a software solution for the university by that information of students can be kept and displayed. The insertion and deletion with update records as well. The report is started with basic principles of java and its features as well. The design solution is discussed to give overview of solution generation and implementation would explore while detailed structure with demonstration of modules individually. The test and documentation describes cases and user documentation. The software is based on java technology and designed on IDE. The Tool is also described with proper description and screenshots are attached with every activity step by step execution. The following point is about the java principles. Each one is described in its extent with example. Basic principles of java: Java is purely object oriented programming language and it follows majorly four principles inheritance, polymorphism, encapsulation etc. The main principles are discussed below: Encapsulation: Encapsulation is the principle of object oriented programming that enables binding of data with methods. It enables the data hiding feature and also provides security of data. It prevents unauthorized users to access the confidential information. It is implemented by using access specifires for example private, protected and public. The encapsulation is applied in java using classes; a class is the whole structure of program and binds the methods with data. Each class is represented by object and the class members can be accessed by this object only. Inheritance: Inheritance is the most powerful design principle of object oriented programming and it is described as inherit the functionality of parent class into its child class. The feature of extending functionalities of paternal class into child class increases the reusability of code. It is the most powerful feature in java and maximum used in coding. Without using inheritance in programming every object need to be described again and again. It saves time and space both while using single object in multiple places. Inheritance also uses encapsulation like subclass objects are bind with superclass objects. Polymorphism: Polymorphism is the capability to use one function in many forms. As the name suggests it self that poly means many and morph means forms. It helps to design generic interface grouped with components. The polymorphism can be implemented in two ways runtime and compile time. Runtime polymorphism is called overriding and compile time polymorphism is called overloading. Both the approaches are used to apply new definition to already declared functions. Overriding is applied by defining the function again. The characteristics and features of Java Programming Language Simple: Java programming is very easy to read as well as to write. Java has adhesive features in itself which make it easy to understand and to learn it. Java is a simple language for getting it as its concept is mostly taken from C++. Secure: Java is secure because it is not harmful for the other system in computer. Web application in java to access is much secure. It gives a secure way of creating an Internet application. Portable: Java supports all types of platform like Windows, Linux, and Mac. Throw internet java program can be easily transferred. Java can be also called as JVM as it is a run-time system and it can execute everywhere. Object-Oriented Programming Language: It provides the features somewhat like C++ i.e. Object Oriented. Java language can also be called as OOP. It is an Object Oriented Programming Language. Robust: Java is that type of programming language which is error free which help the user to work with it. Java is a user friendly programming language. Multithreaded: In the multithreaded programming it makes a link support. Multithreading is the feature that gives multiple program running simultaneously. The multithreading enables multi program running and one program can enable more than one thread. Interpreted: JVM help to interpret the bytes code. Interpretation of java code into byte code. Byte code consists of half machine code and half language. High performance: Faster execution takes place over here through JVM. Over here Byte code is enhance. Distributed: Java can be broadcast over internet. Java allocated with scattered environment. Dynamic: Java gives runtime information of a program and which can also be verified and solve easily. Java enables dynamic programming by run time polymorphism that is called overriding. JAVA RUNTIME ENVIRONMENT (JRE): Java runtime environment is the environment provided by java to run the code and it consist of two main components and they are java runtime machine and garbage collection. Java virtual machine is use to implement the language. The traditional compiler changes the high level language into class file and once the code is converted into class file it can be run on any machine. This makes java platform independent compile once run anywhere. Java virtual machine does the execution work and converts class file into executed file. Garbage collection: Garbage collection is the mechanism to allocate and reallocate memory space. In java automatic garbage collection is done to allocate memory. Garbage collector does the memory reallocation at the time of memory wastage. Java supports memory revocation at the time while memory leak. Therefore there is no memory leakage in java. Automatic garbage collection is supported in java. Java design solution: The given scenario is based on student information record. The student information should be inserted, updated, deleted and displayed. The student informations are First name, Last name, DOB, Student ID, Mobile, Address and Course enrolled. For the solution to this problem proposed program is to be executed and components are used to write as follows J Frame Swing Components J Table The above components are used in the interface design and each one has its own significance. The java frame is used in designing the whole structure of solution and java table is used to display the information. The swing components are used to add labels, textboxes and buttons. The program is written using NETBEANS Integrated development environment (IDE). NETBEANS is the IDE which provides java based components integrated in it and java based programming can be done. The data structure is used for the displaying purpose is table and there are three functionalities has given to user as insertion, deletion and update. It is the desktop application because it is developed using java standard edition. The windows programming is followed to design this solution. The designing structure is prepared using the form structure and information taken from normal input. The next point is about the implementation of design solution using design tool and programming is done using core java. Java SE Technology NETBEANS Design tool Design implementation: The proposed design solution is implemented by writing code in above mentioned IDE that auto corrects and provides suggestions for further design. The design implementation would be shown in following screenshot. The solution is designed in modules and they are as follows INSERTION UPDATE DELETE DISPLAY The page design is done using swing components and the design structure would be shown in the next screenshot. The design coding is shown in above method as could be seen that label and text fields are added. Design implementation structure is shown in next page. The above screenshot is described the designing and how would the page would be look like. The table structure would be shown in other module information and also the coding would be attached with each page activity. Insertion: The very first module in the proposed software implementation is inserting information into table and the information is taken manually. As shown in above diagram there is a list attached for course enrollment and four options are given. The address field is taken with text area so that if address is in long form can be managed easily. The screenshots are as follows: Page code is shown in this screenshot The insertion activity would be seen in below screen shots: The information is collected and shown in the table below so in this manner insertion is done. Update: The second main feature of this application software is to update the inserted information. And first the row is selected by clicking method and for this purpose mouse click event is implemented in coding that would be shown in below screenshot. In this picture the row has been selected to be updated. Now the Course selected would be changed in below picture As can be seen in above picture record has been changed. The coding of this update page is also attached. Deletion: The last module for the design implementation is to delete the selected row from the table. For this purpose the function is written on the action command of delete button. The function contains a simple command and executed after pressing the button. Now the demonstration is being shown using next picture. In the next picture the selected record would be deleted. In this manner the module implementation is done the above screenshots are attached to make an understanding to the demonstration of software. All above mentioned functions are working properly. The next points cover error handling and object utilization. Error handling control flow structure: The proposed solution does not contain any error handing because the classes implemented in the coding does not throw any critical exception. The control flow structures are used in mouse click event function and executed successfully. The error handing is the main feature of java because it handles the system errors by java runtime environment. It gives java unique feature to run the program and makes it more dynamic. The below screenshots would clear the idea of using it in proposed solution. The error handling in java can be done using different statements as follows Try catch statement Throw key word Throws keyword All three methods of handling the exceptions in java are applied on specific requirement places. For this program the throws exception clause is used so that main function automatically throws it. Test design documentation: Test of software is done at the user extent and the solution is tested from its design to its execution. The white box testing is implemented in this kind of software solution because white box testing is umbrella activity and it runs with each activity of software. The design documentation can be done in two ways first is user and other is technical review. The user can use the proposed solution as shown in screenshots and all activities run independently therefore functions run one by one. The design of software is done to implement different modules as already discussed in detail at the beginning of the report. The technical document contains technology is used in it java and tool for designing the interface and coding as well. The best part of unitizing the IDE NETBEANS is that one should not need to apply effort on the design interface rather the tool provides facility to drag and drop components directly to frame. This approach saves time and effort both. Conclusion: The software solution is developed according to given requirements. The solution to problem is attached with implementation step. The steps are clearly mentioned and described using live running frame. The proposed solution is helpful in small scale record and displaying it but the future scope is vast because the essential information can be utilized in future as well. The solution provided includes detailed information of each module with its demonstration also. The screenshots are attached to demonstrate the software and comments are mentioned to check the functionality described using functional code. The code pages are also attached in the files and each image is described with comments. The goal is achieved so far but if any requirement is not fulfilled than it would be covered in full version to this project. The report is about the design and implementation of principles of java in the program developed and so far all are utilized in it.

Thomas Jefferson Essays (8234 words) - Thomas Jefferson,
Thomas Jefferson Sadly, modern Americans seem to have done a better job preserving what Thomas Jefferson has left us in bricks and mortar than we have preserving his ideas. Tourists visiting Charlottesville, Virginia, can witness firsthand the ongoing efforts to preserve Jefferson's home at Monticello as well as his splendid little Academical Village, the Lawn, which is still a vital center of student life at the University of Virginia. Further down the road, near Lynchburg, Virginia, preservationists have begun restoring Poplar Forest, Jefferson's retreat home. Scholars have been less successful in keeping alive his philosophy, particularly his ideas about government -- despite the copious record he left in his writings. Ken Burns's recent PBS documentary, Thomas Jefferson, is a case in point. It features a parade of scholars who simultaneously declare their own inability to understand Jefferson, and mislead others with interpretations of his life and thought that are as questionable as they are contradictory. Burns informs the viewer, for example, that Jefferson's life was full of contradictions: the man of the people with the tastes of an aristocrat, the natural rights philosopher who owned slaves, the lifelong champion of small government who more than doubled the size of the United States, and so on. Most of these alleged contradictions really aren't as antithetical as they appear, for they are based on faulty assumptions or misunderstandings of principles. Joseph Ellis, for example, reasserts the bromide -- common among modern liberal academics -- that the ideals of equality and the pursuit of happiness, as expressed in Jefferson's Declaration of Independence, are unattainable or contradictory. But there's nothing contradictory about equality of rights and each individual's pursuit of happiness, if the concept of rights is properly understood. Herbert Spencer's law of equal freedom, the radical Whigs' concept of natural liberty, and Jefferson's concept of natural society all accounted for how the two can work together. The fact that many of today's intellectuals simply don't get it reveals much more about them than it does about Jefferson. Misinterpretations of Jefferson's political thinking seem pandemic these days. The 1993 celebrations of the 250th anniversary of Jefferson's birth, for example, typically championed his reputation as father of American democracy. Chief Justice William Rehnquist, speaking at the University of Virginia, echoed the views of many Jefferson scholars that the permanence of Jefferson resided not in his specific theories or acts of government, but in his democratic faith. While it is certainly true that Jefferson was a leading proponent of representative democracy -- in Democracy in America , Alexis de Tocqueville called Jefferson the most powerful advocate democracy has ever sent forth -- his devotion to democracy was neither absolute nor unqualified. Indeed, Tocqueville thought it significant that Jefferson once warned James Madison that the tyranny of the legislature was the danger most to be feared in American government. To Jefferson, democracy and its associated principles -- majority rule, equal rights, direct representation of the people in government -- were valuable, not as ends in themselves, but as essential means to a greater end, the maximization of individual freedom in civil society. Liberty was Jefferson's highest value; he dedicated his life to what he once called the holy cause of freedom.1 A Radical Whig What repeatedly drew Jefferson away from his tranquil domestic life at Monticello and back into the political fray was precisely that holy cause of freedom, to which he felt duty-bound whenever he saw liberty threatened by a powerful central government -- whether it was the British government under King George III or the United States government under Federalist administrations. His passion for this cause was reflected in the language that he used in his political writings. Jefferson, the zealous defender of religious freedom, tended to use words such as holy, orthodox, or catholic when discussing political, not religious, principles; he reserved words such as heretic or apostate to denounce politicians whom he regarded as the enemies of liberty. He summed up his life's work in a letter written relatively early in his public career, in 1790, soon after his return to the United States following his ambassadorship to France. [T]he ground of liberty is to be gained by inches . . . [W]e must be contented to secure what we

Anxiety essays
Anxiety essays Most people have a view of what they think mental illness is. Most of us have seen, at one time or another, someone walking on the street muttering to him or herself, perhaps gesturing, or picking through trash cans but pulling out peculiar things, or exhibiting other behaviors we think are "off" in some way. However, most people who meet the criteria of some psychiatric diagnosis look just like everyone else. In fact, the characteristics for most psychiatric disorders are behaviors we all show at one time or another. They just occur more often and cause problems for the person (Frey, 1999). For instance, we all worry sometimes or feel anxious sometimes, but we don't meet The diagnostic standards set out in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV (DSM-IV) unless the symptoms are severe enough that they actively interfere with important parts of our lives, such as work or relationships, in a significant way (Frey, 1999). One of the most common diagnoses from DSM-IV are anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorders are a cluster of diagnoses that all have anxiety as a main symptom (Frey, 1999). It is a good example of the importance in the diagnostic process of symptoms interfering with life in significant ways, because we all feel anxious sometimes. As one source says, "Normal (sometimes called objective) anxiety occurs when people react appropriately to the situation causing the anxiety. For example, most people feel anxious on the first day at a new job for any number of reasons. They are uncertain how they will be received by co-workers, they may be unfamiliar with their duties, or they may be unsure they made the correct decision in taking the job. Despite these feelings and any accompanying physiological responses, they carry on and eventually adapt" In addition, fear or anxiety is not only normal but appropriate in some circumstances, suc...

How do you define success Do you feel that you have been successful Essay
How do you define success Do you feel that you have been successful How would you work to achieve greater success both professionally and personally - Essay Example I feel very disheartened when I see people who have started very well early on in their careers, excelled at the threshold of their professional lives but fizzle out very soon. Is it due to the clutches of materialism? Or does the initial spurt of success get the better of their consciousness? I would not know. I for one have been fortunate to be blessed with little successes along the way ââ¬â enough to motivate me and keep me going, yet scarce enough to play the role of appetizers, making me crave for more. At the very beginning of my career, as an employee of the Building Permit Department of Kuwait Municipality along with issuing approvals for building designs, an occasional client who could not afford an engineering consultancy would ask me to design. Thus, I began discovering my inherent creativity, my natural desire to create and my deep-rooted love for real estate. I did feel a little sense of achievement doing this, but success would not be the right word to describe the feeling. I went on to establish a trading firm in partnership and became the managing partner. We diversified into a lot of businesses. From taking sub-franchisees of an ice-cream company to taking the distributorship of an automotive company, our mainstay of course being buying and selling real estate ââ¬â dealing in land and building on them. My initial experience with my own business taught me that I have a natural instinct to manage and run a business and a positive attitude towards dealing with people and getting work done. It also made me realize that the only way to understand the concept of Business Management on your own is to actually be in the thick of the action. Since it was my own money and assets involved, my commitment could not be questioned. I feel I have the necessary qualities to be a successful manager. An Executive MBA program, besides honing my technical skills, will give me an insight into markets and the financial world. This

Sustainable Marketing - Essay Example In order to successfully deliver a competitive market, most of the companies do pass their products through the environmental effect that their products might be having; once it is clear in a particular area if sustainable marketing is effective in the overall goal of the company as whole. (Binswanger, H. 1994) This will lead to the overall improvement in the achievement of all the set objective, visions, missions and goals of a particular business despite the existing challenges in the market. Critical analysis of sustainability marketing; The main objective of sustainable marketing is not to influence consumers into a buying green; instead it practically presents clear information that the product life cycle has greatly impacted the Business environment and leaves the decision with the customer to make the final choice. This is because marketing is about creating consumer but not forcing or luring them to make consumption choices. An advantage received by implementing a sustainable marketing technique is that; it helps the company to reduce the companyââ¬â¢s carbon footprint, crating and developing an effective sustainability as well as convincing more people about the general company intension in serving the customers by having minimum environmental burden as much as possible. Influence other businesses also to adopt sustainable marketing practice; Suitable marketing can effectively help the Business owner to create a bigger impact by influencing employees to adopt such a sustainable market business practice ( Iwata, O. (1997). For example a new climate change initiative can help others comprehend how they can easily make a positive difference in the flight against any climatic changes. Easy to embed the sustainable Business practice into the business strategy; Measurable goals should be set by listing the key activities to be undertaken so as to competently achieve these set goals by making sure that all the senior personnelââ¬â¢s are responsible for effective goal achievement. (Fuller.1999). Some of these sustainable business practices are, sustainable budget which helps in ensuring financial sustainability and creation of strong relationship between the customers, staff other businesses and the community as a whole (Anderson, A R. 1995). Is China Facing a Financial Crisis?
Is China Facing a Financial Crisis? In a first for Chinese Banks and its Big Four, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) unseated Exxon Mobil last year to take the top spot on the Forbes Global 2000[i] as the worldââ¬â¢s largest company. China Construction Bank moved up 11 spots to No. 2 on the list.à Agricultural Bank of China stood at No. 8 and Bank of China with its double digit growth in sales and profits; improved its ranking by 10 places to No. 11[ii]. However what is more interesting is that ICBC, worldââ¬â¢s largest and most profitable bank itself was on the verge of defaulting until a last minute decision to bail it out earlier in January this year. A 3 Billion Yuan (around $500 million) product issued by China Credit Trust Co., a shadow bank and marketed through ICBC was underpinned by a loan to a mining operation of Shanxi Zhenfu Energy Group that later collapsed as the price of coal plummeted. Investors were promised a hefty 10% annual return over three years, but were told in January n ot to expect payment. Some of the investors, who reportedly put as much as $500,000 each into the fund, said ICBC should reimburse them since it had marketed the product. ICBC insisted that it had never guaranteed the product, and had no legal responsibility to pay investors. The banks chairman even went so far as to describe the episode as a learning opportunity for investors, shadow banks and ICBC. However the learning opportunity was missed, thanks to a bailout by an unnamed third party that ensured investors will recover their initial investment, though interest will not be paid[iii]. Shadow Banking in China comprises of a web of non-banks that includes pawn shops, underground banks, various wealth management products, trust companies, and guarantors ââ¬â many of which donââ¬â¢t take deposits to insure against risky lending activities and operate completely beyond the eye of regulators and authorities. These firms offer loans to companies or individuals that may have trouble securing traditional bank financing. Often, the loans are then packaged and sold to investors looking for higher returns. In China, the sectors exact reach is unknown, but some estimates put its size at roughly 60% of Chinas GDP[iv]. The China Banking Regulating Commission (CBRC) caps the value of loans that banks can extend relative to the value of deposits at 75%. Because of this cap, banks prefer to issue off-balance sheet loans in order to maintain lower loan-to-deposit ratios (LDRs).While the latest estimates for lending from Chinaââ¬â¢s biggest banks put February 14ââ¬â¢s new loans at 800 Billion Yuan, the highest February figure since the 4 Trillion Yuan stimulus in 2009, reports are emerging that the strength in new loans is not driven by real demand, but rather by banks moving off-balance sheet loans on to the balance sheet as part of the governmentââ¬â¢s broader crackdown on shadow banking[v]. It is one of the many indicators that signify the slowdown of Chinese economy. In 2012, there were two trust defaults, one for a product distributed by Huaxia BankLtd. and one sold by CITIC Trust. While it was learned thatZhongfa Industrial Groupin the end guaranteed the first, the solution to the second was never made public[vi]. Beijing knows that a default could prompt investors to pull theirmoneyfrom other trust products and stop providing the deposits needed to supply credit and fuel economic growth. A default would likely lead to a loss of confidence in Chinas trust and other shadow credit markets and a shrinkage of liquidity in those markets, and hence, a credit crunch. Some analysts however argue that a default is needed to demonstrate Beijings commitment to allow market forces to play a larger role in the economy, and to send a message to investors that high-yield investments carry significant risk. The China Banking Regulatory Commission said non-performing loans (NPLs) made by Chinese lenders reached 592 Billion Yuan in the final three months of last year. The last NPLs were at the same level was September 2008, the month when US investment bank Lehman Brothers collapsed. Loans by Chinese lenders have grown at an unprecedented rate in the past five years, with banks increasing the size of their balance sheets by 89 Trillion Yuan, an amount roughly equivalent to the size of the entire US banking industry[vii]. Chinese non-financial companies held total outstanding bank borrowing and bond debt of about $12 trillion at the end of last year equal to over 120 percent of GDP according to Standard Poors estimates[viii]. Trust companies along with other non-bank financial institutions such as securities brokerages have become a vital source of credit, allowing banks to arrange off-balance-sheet refinancing for maturing loans that risky borrowers such as the local government financing vehicles (LGFV) cannot repay from their internal cash flow. By law, Chinaââ¬â¢s local governments are not allowed to borrow. After the 2008 global financial crisis, Beijing conceded some relaxations and local governments created LGFV (Local Government Financing Vehicles), also known as UDICs (Urban Development and Investment Companies), which though separate from but owned or controlled by the local government, were permitted to borrow. The LGFV generally borrowed funds predominantly from banks (as much as 80% or more), with the remainder raised by issuing bonds or equity-like instruments to insurance companies, institutional investors and individuals. Recently, with pressure on banks to curtail loans, these financing vehicles have borrowed from Chinaââ¬â¢s shadow banking system. Audits released for the first time show that Chinas wealthiest eastern provinces are the most indebted, though repayment burdens are more onerous in poorer areas such as the southwestern provinces. Tibet was the only region that did not release an audit report[ix]. According to statistics from the National Audit Office, as of June 2013 government debt at all levels totaled about 20.7 Trillion Yuan (US$3.4 trillion), of which domestic government debt accounted for around 10.9 Trillion Yuan (US$1.8 trillion). Of this amount, 2.39 Trillion Yuan (US$390 billion), or 22%, is due in spring of this year[x]. We can add that including the local government debt that matures this year, there is an estimated 5 Trillion Yuan of trust products that are maturing, including as much as 1 Trillion Yuan in May[xi]. If the China Credit Trust product was allowed to default, Chinaââ¬â¢s financial system might have been sitting on hundreds of billions, if not trillions of Yuan worth of non-performing loans in just a few months time. Chinacan rarely allow corporate failures, particularly of state-backed companies, partly out of fear that widespread layoffs could lead to social unrest. All this makes things all the tougher for the Peopleââ¬â¢s Bank of China espec ially when interbank rates are at an all time high to control the local debt. Further the rising Chinese Yuan, which has gained around 33% since 2005 against the U.S. currency, increases their returns has led to asurge in loans to Chinese companies from outside the country has contributed to big inflows of cash into the mainland (mainly short-term and speculative in nature), trying to profit from the mainlands relatively highinterest rates[xii]. Hence when the more the PBOC pumps into the system, the more it encourages risky lending, pushing the country closer to a debt crisis. But when the central bank has declined to add cash to the systemââ¬ânotably in Juneà andà December of 2013ââ¬âliquidity has seized up. The scale of trust assets however still pales in comparison to total banking sector assets of more than 100 TrillionYuanas of the end of June. But without trusts, the banking systems non-performing loans (NPL) ratio might be much higher, although accurate estimates are not possible[xiii]. China bears argue that a vast majority of the trust loans cannot be repaid, which will eventually require substantial bailouts and lead to a collapse in the banking system and a larger economic crisis. Even if this is exaggerated and the assets are good, huge liquidity risks exist given the known mismatch between the duration of trust loans and their underlying investments.
